The Amazon River in South America is the world's largest river. It is 6400km long, making it the second longest river in the world behind the Nile. At its widest part the Amazon is 48km wide. The source of the Amazon River starts in the Andes mountains and ends at the mouth of the river in the N.E. of Brazil. It flows through Peru, Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador and Brazil. The mouth of the Amazon flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The Amazon River has over 1100 tributaries joining it during its journey and some of them are over 1000 miles long. For most of its length, the river flows through the world's largest rainforest, the Amazon. It covers 6.5 million sq km and is home to more than one-third of all species in the world
